Sign Language Lessons
Every Thursday, Ms. Catlin Wallis-Colins teaches Baby ASL to all the students at UYVDC.

My name is Caitlin Wallis-Collins and I teach Baby ASL to all the students at UYVDC. I majored in Linguistics at Trent University and have always had a love for languages and communication.
A few years ago, my young children had expressed an interest in learning ASL, in case they ever had a classmate or met a child on the playground who was deaf/hard of hearing. We decided to learn together by following the wonderful Rachel Coleman’s Baby Signing Time program and Rachel and the Tree Schoolers. Rachel Coleman’s programs have been a favourite in our home ever since, and with her help we have learned over 200 signs.

I now teach Baby ASL to our students at UYVDC as part of our enriched programs. Studies show long-term cognitive benefits for children, including speech and emotional development. ASL also enables children to communicate effectively, lowers frustration levels, improves child-parent bonding, reinforces the learning of educational concepts such as ABC’s, animals, and other specific themes, improves attentiveness to social gestures of others as well as of themselves, earlier reading and larger reading vocabulary, larger speaking vocabulary and ability to form longer sentences, increases self esteem, among many others. The benefits and advantages are truly immense.
Implementing sign language in daycare centres and schools creates a more inclusive culture and provides a sense of openness and acceptance.

STEM
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. While we don’t expect any toddler or preschooler to be solving rocket science problems in daycare, we support and encourage our young ones to explore the world with a STEM perspective. At UYVDC we develop our activities and daycare programs around a learning program that exposes your children to new ways of thinking and playing. This approach encourages them to indulge in their curiosity which is the building block for any successful STEM student.
